Holiday Pillowcases!

I am currently taking a FABULOUS parenting class and in one of the sessions we talked about the importance of traditions in our homes. It truly touched me. Seriously could talk for hours on the awesomeness of it all.  It really helps our children feel loved and apart of the family.  It gives them treasured memories as well.  And it's just plain ole' fun!  I am trying to start a few new ones and one is a Halloween Pillowcase.  We put them on October 1st for my kiddo's to sleep on, which they think is pretty stinkin' cool, and then on Halloween night they can pull them off and use them as their 'Trick or Treat' bags! You could make some for any other Holiday as well...hmmm...maybe a Valentines piller with a pocket for little love notes would be cute.

p.s. this is not my pillow.
As for the pattern I used...well...I just made it up as I went along. I did, however, find a link on Pinterest (of course) that has a really easy way to make them if you so desire. There is a link below for the PDF instructions and another link for a step by step video! But please ask any questions if needs be.  I am always happy to help ya!

I challenge you to start a new tradition too!

Smell My Feet!

I am fortunate enough to be friends with two AMAZING illustrators; Jillustration and Rani from letteringdelights.com. I think that their website is a MUST not only for scrapbookers, card-makers, but for QUILTERS and hand embroidery! I plan on using more and more of their designs in my future endevors. You MUST check them out! Example of how I used some of their stuff below:

I LOVED Jill's "Smell My Feet" collection and wanted to make a Halloween wall hanging with it. And the colors are perfect. So simple! If you have made any of my patterns then you know how to trace and adhere for applique. That's all I did here. After I purchased this collection, which is only $4.00 for the whole bundle - SMELL MY FEET -
I simply printed them out and then blew them up to the size I desired. If you look closely you can see my 4 white squares in the quilt. Those squares FINISH at: 8.5 x 11.  The checkered fabric I folded in half and ironed down then sewed it so it would make more of a flap for fun. This is our family's FAVORITE Halloween decoration by far!

Enjoy!
Please let me know if you have any questions!

I couldn't wait to share and so I still have to quilt it and sew on a binding. oops. AND I haven't named it yet...suggestions? I was thinking something with 'doodle'?

HELP!

. . . . . .
In my attempts to make my NEW quilt pattern totally awesome...I got a smidge frustrated. So I resorted to ingesting my pins! Well, I wasn't crazy enough to actually swallow them, but I did step on one a day later! YeeOuch!

Flawless Binding

I love this method of sewing on your binding because it is virtual seamless! No more 'lump'.

1. Sew you binding on as you normally do but leave about a 10 inch tail 'above' where you start.
2. When you come close to the end or corner, stop and measure 1/4 inch from the bottom to where you will need to stop sewing
(mark with a pin if you like).
 3. Back-stitch once you reach that point and pull your quilt and cut thread from machine.
-Then fold binding over so that it aligns with the quilt (dotted line) it should you followed step 2 correctly.
 4. Then fold the binding back over checking to make sure that the 'side' is aligned with the quilt (dotted line).
5. There is your fold you just did in step 4. Pin in place.
6. Now start sewing right from the edge down the other side.
7. All your corners should look like this:
8. Once you have come to the starting side and are about to meet up with your 10'' tail stop within 10''-20''.
9. Lay the starting binding strip flat and aligned with the raw edge of quilt. Repeat with your ending tail. Crease the second tail where it meets the first tail's straight cut end. Measure the distance of the binding strip's cut width. So I cut my binding at 2.5'' and that's how I know where to measure then cut.
 10. Might want to mark with a straight line and then cut.
-Should look like this after you have cut it:

WARNING!
The following steps get a bit tricky. But don't worry. You can do this. Go slow and no worries if you sew it wrong the first couple of times...believe me I have. You can always pull out your trusty 'unpicker' and try again.

11. Open the end tail and lay flat. Leave there and move to step 12 working with the starting tail.
12. Open the starting tail of binding.

13. I want to word this right as not to confuse you but it's a little tricky...here we go...looking at the image above; 'rotate' the "TOP of strip" towards you and then lay down on quilt top as shown in image below.
14.Now lay the end of the binding tail on top of the starting binding tail.
15.With right sides together align at a right angle and mark with a pencil. Pin in place.
16. Sew down the line.
CHECK! 'Pull' your binding to see if it lays correctly. If it is twisted then unpick your stitch and go back to Step11 and repeat. BUT if it look good then you're a Rock Star!
16. Measure 1/4'' from stitch line and cut. Bye bye 'ear'.
 17. Iron that seam open.
18. Pin your joined binding in place aligned with raw edge and sew down.
When you fold over check out how BOOTIFUL your biding is!! Practically seamless...flawless...ah.
p.s. I know have 18 steps for this tutorial, but I did that in case you have any questions you can go by that very specific step. Please don't be shy and ask for help if needed.

'Fashionista' T-Shirt Dress.

This was not made from a pattern...but from me and my dear friend Bobbins brain, trial and error, peanut butter oatmeal white chocolate cookies and these items: (recipe below)
  • 1. T-shirt from Target.
  • 2. Shiny fabric cut into 3 strips; small, med, large. (I had to add an additional strip to Roo's for length)
  • 3. Black and white ribbon sewn over the top strip seam to form a belt/band.
The process in making this dress was not very 'clean' we totally made it up as we went. But here a few tips in case you want to try it for yourself. I measured the width of the shirt to know how long my strips needed to be to sew them to the shirt. I add 4 inches in length to the first strip to gather and add a little wave, 6 inches to the second strip, 8 inches to the bottom strip. NOTE! The fabric, although shiny and pretty, doesn't stretch! My friend is going to have to add a zipper to her daughters dress because she can't get it over her shoulders. I would use something with stretch next time. For Quinn's dress I simply sewed each strip on to the actually t-shirt. My friend made a little slip and sewed her strips to that first then sewed the slip/skirt to the t-shirt.

Roo and Hoo

What do these two have in common?

  1. They are both undeniably freakin' cute.
  2. I carry their squishy butts all around God's green Earth.
  3. They can be seen regularly at Target with popcorn in them.

This awesome tote totally inspired me. As soon as I saw it I wanted to make a bag with poor ladies leather, pleather. Never used it before so I am going to play and play, but once I make something post worthy I will share. Unfortunately, I will not be able to share how to make the adorable 'Roo'...ahem.
